i was gonna photoshop phil's face onto wall-e's body but quickly realized the time and effort to humor ratio was not good

tomorrow josie and i will be embarking on a quick trip to philadelphia, a city i always enjoy visiting. i am really excited about going and i expect josie to be an ideal traveling companion. because we're only going to be there for a little over a day, we have to just pick a few things we want to do and enjoy. obviously things don't always go as planned and here is a list of trip predictions:
  • i will regret not requesting the hypo-allergenic pillows
  • you will be able to witness josie's smile fade as she is subjected to picture after picture (flipbook style)
  • we will drink way too much coffee
  • i will run into soulja boy again
  • i will find some amazing sunglasses
  • bystanders will roll their eyes when i recreate the rocky scene at the pma
  • we will skip the veggie cheesesteak
  • i will be asked to "please stop making a scene"
  • the independent will not disappoint, except for their european breakfast
  • we will hit the gym with an intensity that makes the rest of the gym members uncomfortable
  • we will be nerdy and write yelp reviews
  • i will draw at least one thing
  • i will debate someone in john wall vs evan turner
we'll see how accurate my crystal ball is. i do really enjoy hanging out in philly and i think we will try to book a slightly more extended trip in the near future to really enjoy the city.

look at all the beautiful babies

the blog slacking continues, but at least i have been contributing some to my more project-based blog with josie. facebook continues to be a major time suck and i just don't see it fading anytime soon. various things have been going on in my life recently. i have certainly been more socially active, dating, meeting new people, going out a lot more frequently, etc. it's all been a nice change from the norm. with that in mind, i am quickly approaching what will surely be a life-defining trip to las vegas. i will be flying in with vegas veteran eskay and well will be meeting up with phil, erin, her sis and a bunch of their crew. we will be starting things off with the very un-kevin bottle service at some club on the strip. from there, i have no idea what to expect, but here are a few predictions:
  • eskay will be forcefully removed from either a bar, club, casino or buffet
  • i will lose a medium amount of money
  • i will spend way too much on food and drinks
  • cirque will not disappoint
  • it will be too cold for the pool, but it won't stop me
  • i will attempt to learn craps by watching phil play. he will win a bunch of money quickly, then i will play and mess up everyone's luck. i will then be booed off the table
  • i will make it to the gym once
  • my love for drinking from an open container will initially be sky high but quickly lose it's luster
  • erin will put up with me and eskay in a very classy way
  • phil will give me many looks ranging from "shut up" to "you need to stop drinking now"
  • eskay's wild rollercoaster ride in gambling will be too much for me to handle
  • it will be awesome to see kim after...at least 5 years, probably longer
  • the sports book will be the best way for me to lose money
  • i will do a shot with the midget at o'shea's
  • i will start taking a lot of pictures but then become self conscious about looking too touristy
  • i will miss jessie
  • someone will make a comment about how they haven't had any vegetables for a few days
  • apparently nobody on this trip has seen swingers so all of my movie quotes will go unappreciated
i think that about sums it up. i have had many people tell me to go see specific things, but there's only so much you can see in 3.5 days. i am really looking forward to this and have not been on a trip in quite a while. hopefully i return un-pierced, un-tattooed, un-married, un-injured and still have a place to live.

what i can remember

it's been a few weeks since i have returned from my vacation and i realize that if i don't blog about it soon, my memory of most things will become pretty hazy. overall it was a very nice trip with some ups and downs.

pros
  • i got to spend an entire week with louise...no work, chores, errands, mentally challenged dog, etc.
  • the beach...ridiculously clean and beautiful
  • the swimming pools..also very well maintained...louise and i played a lot in the pool
  • our room...it was gigantic with 18 foot ceilings, sunken living room
  • unlimited drinking...which was good in theory
  • relaxed pace
  • staff...all worked very hard...most were very friendly
  • swimming with sting rays and nurse sharks
  • snorkeling
  • the grounds...very well maintained, lots of plants and wildlife...ducks!
  • topless women...while it started off with more older women...it shifted more towards hot and young as our vacation progressed
  • my british gf emma
  • boogy-boarding
  • straight chillin

cons
  • i got a serious stomach bug which i blame soley on one chubby little kid that did a cannonball off of the pool bar...he also tried to punch me at one point
  • the food...it was ok buffet food...but i am used to excellent cruise food
  • not as many activities...again this is more based on my cruising experiences...we did go to one show which was a mashup of performers imitating famous singers
  • aggressive salespeople that want you to tour their timeshares, look at their jewelery, etc.
  • lack of sunblock...my mom convinced me that our 2 bottles of sunblock were enough...she may not truly understand louise's level of whiteness...we had to buy another bottle...we went with the cheapest one we could find ($20)
  • rude europeans...now i generally think fondly about europe and europeans as i had a great time there 10 years ago...but damn, they were so unnecessarily nasty to the staff and seemed to never tip...they also butted in line at the buffet often
  • one of the guys at the omelete station...i don't know what i did to him, but he was always giving me the stink eye

it was a very nice and relaxing vacation and i would probably have more drunken exploits to report had i not gotten sick. the whole trip was a good deal and i would consider doing it again in a few years, but maybe upgrade to slightly nicer resort with the hopes that the food is nicer and there are a few more things to do.

vacation forecast

as i mentioned yesterday, we are headed to the dominican republic pretty soon. i booked this trip so long ago and have been anticipating it so much that it feels a little weird that it is actually approaching. i tend to get real hyped up for trips where i am constantly reading reviews and any info i can get on where i am going. this will be my first trip to an "all-inclusive" resort and i hope to make good use of the inclusives.

with all of this in mind, i realize that the trip will not be perfect and i like to have reasonable expectations. here are a few things that i predict will happen.
  1. i will get sick from drinking way too much the first day we arrive.
  2. louise will hesitantly enter the water after i make fun of her...she will see a fish or a shell or some seaweed, shriek and run out of the water.
  3. i will bring many books with the intention of reading and end up reading a total of 20 pages.
  4. i will learn the hard way that you should not get too close to the wildlife.
  5. louise will get tons of bug bites while i remain blissfully bite-free.
  6. i will describe to louise how upon our return, i plan on picking jessie up and tossing her in the air like a pizza pie.
  7. neither of us will get sunburned...just kidding...louise + domrep sun = curly-haired lobster
  8. our attempts at speaking spanish will be embarassing.
  9. i will see a coconut tree...boast to louise about how i could climb said tree and retrieve a coconut...after giving up quickly, i explain to louise how coconuts are over-rated.
  10. louise will have numerous flip-flop malfunctions.
  11. i will really enjoy interacting with the staff, who seem so friendly...yet in the back of my mind i worry that they secretly hate me.
  12. archery will not be as fun as expected.
  13. the swim-up bar will be more fun than expected.
  14. louise will do her poor jamaican accent.
  15. i will be cautious with my money at the casino.
  16. i will find, purchase and wear a big stupid hat that louise hates.

yeah! drink up stupid american douchebag!

...on the playground's where i spent most of my days...

louise and i took a nice holiday trip to philadelphia. we only stayed 3 nights, but we got see most of the things we wanted to and after 3 days, louise starts to miss jessie too much. whenever i am away and wonder what jessie is currently doing...i usually picture something like this...
let's see..we stayed at the radisson hotel right in the middle of the city next to rittenhouse square. the room was huge and had a plasma screen so you know it was balla. we did some walking around the first day...and after about 20 minutes i realized i overdressed...it wasn't ridiculously cold like i expected. we got some subs from some place called jimmie johns...i think...delicious. while walking around, my keen eye also spotted a bus that may or may not have contained souljah boy.

later that night we went out and went to an irish pub called irish pub. it was nice and not too busy...but not dead. we found our own little area in the corner. louise drank some of their local beers, while i drank a lot of maker's mark and the beer that louise did not end up drinking. i was feeling good and tipsy. i remember sitting there with her really engaged in our conversation, feeling appreciative that i have a girlfriend that i really enjoy talking to.

the next day we visited the reading terminal market which was sort of like baltimore's lexington market, but much nicer and with a more pleasant aroma. we walked around and looked at amish stuff and lots of food. we bought stuff for louise's parents. i found a vegetarian food booth that served veggie cheese steaks. well i figured, since i'm in philly...might as well...it was...not great.

tastes like dissapointment

later that night we visited south street, which was mostly disappointing. louise bought some shoes and we ate at this nice and cheap mexican restaurant where louise did some eavesdropping on the other cutomers.

the last full day we were in philly was devoted to visiting some museums. i had intended on going to the museum of art to do the rocky steps run, but we decided on the ben franklin science institute and the mutter museum. the bfsi was cool and interactive. we checked out exhibits on sports and the human heart. i got to mix it up a little with mia hamm. we also saw an imax movie on ancient sea monsters which was cool except it was all cg.

the mutter museum was interesting. it was very similar to the walter reed museum i visited on a school field trip. there were a lot of medical anomalies and oddities that served well to make me uncomfortable and uneasy. no photography was allowed in the museum, which was probably a good thing unless my blog reader were interested in seeing unborn fetuses in jars.

one another thing i wanted to write down before i forgot was the diner across the street from our hotel. we ate their twice and really liked their food, prices, being open 24 hours as well as their name, little pete's.

are you philly'n me?

louise and i are planning a brief trip to philadelphia at the end of next week. i have been to philly a few times and have enjoyed the city. it will be nice to get away for a few days, even though it will probably be freezing. here are my notes for things i might want to go see, do, things i need to get before we go, etc.

i think we have narrowed down the hotel choices. the hotel we are probably going to book has sleep number beds! i am embarrassingly excited about this and can't wait to find out what my number is. they also allows dogs! while it would be awesome to bring jessie, the hotel might not want to house a dog of her gigantic, oafish girth. also, bringing jessie may limit the places we can go and it will be cold outside, so jessie might not like going outside...even if she wears her sweater. i think we will probably leave jessie at home to hang out with dave, nicki and a visiting seamus.

i am interested in the following:
  • the franklin institute science museum - this is a nice and nerdy source of edutainment and also has an imax theater
  • the reading terminal market - i love places like this...farmer's market, produce, baked good, crafts, junk, etc.
  • philadelphia museum of art - i like to pretend i am slightly intellectual...actually i think i have been here before and it was cool
  • shopping - christmas shopping sucks....hopefully we can get some more of it done here
  • dining - one of my favorite aspects of traveling...i hope to find a lot of vegetarian eating options...maybe i will ask for a veggie steak and cheese at gino's...and maybe i will get beat up
  • drinking - another nice change-up from my suburban lifestyle is going to bars, getting drunk and walking back to my hotel room
  • something historic - maybe we will go see the liberty bell or ben franklin's house...
  • u.s. mint - so i can see how thick my paper is gonna be
  • spend some time with louise - we are not one of those weirdo romantic couples, but it will be nice to spend some time together

here are some things we need to do/get before we go:
  • thermal underwear
  • new winter coat for louise
  • find gloves, hat, scarf
  • book the hotel
  • schedule out what we both want to do/see (3 days will go by quickly)
  • get a philly travel book or at least visit some websites to know where to eat, what else to see, etc.
it will be nice to get away...and also nice in that it leads right into my winter break, so when we return, i won't have work the next day. i hope to take a bunch of pictures and post about the trip when i return. for anyone who has spent any time in philly...any suggestions or ideas?

montreal

look at that, 2 posts in 1 day??? well hopefully i can write this today, because if a post transpired over multiple days...i'll be honest, wouldn't get finished. maybe if i am on a roll, there will be 3. so this is me trying to catch up on things.

the #1 major event over the summer was probably going to montreal with louise. and since this happened about 3 months ago, it may not be the most accurate account of what happened. anyways, i had been there once a few years ago and really enjoyed the city. louise had never been there or out of the country. the weather would be nice and it was a slow time at work, so we booked it.

we had an early-ass flight...like 6am i believe, so that meant we had to be there at 4am. not fun, but i guess when you want to save money, these are the things you have to do. anyways, dave was nice enough to sacrifice sleep and drop us off at bwi. from there we had a layover somewhere and the made it to montreal, i believe around noon. you, the loyal reader may be asking yourself, "why am i writing so much about getting there?". excellent question, the answer: brown.

this is getting long, so i am going to break down the trip with some of my famous bullet points:

  • we stayed at hotel omni mont-royal, which was a pretty nice hotel, had a little balcony and was also right in the middle of the city.
  • i drank a lot of 40 oz beers, usually making my choice based on the alcohol content vs cost ratio...i was drinking some sick 12% beer
  • we did a lot of walking - we really did a lot of exploring through the city, and i had to listen to lot of complaining from louise :)
  • we hiked mount royal - it wasn't a very tough hike, but it was kind of long and the view from the top was really nice
  • we had a very nice picnic at some park where we sat under a tree, ate giant sandwiches and read
  • we went to the botanical garden that had tons of crazy orchids and other plants, my camera battery died halfway through....we also stopped by the insectarium there...kinda lame
  • we checked out the underground city, which wasn't as cool as i remembered it, but i might appreciate it more if it were winter
  • montreal is probably the most vegetarian place i have ever visited - chu chai, la comensal, etc. - almost all restaurants had numerous vegetarian options
  • many of the citizens of montreal were friendly, attractive and often times both
  • louise and i went to a hookah bar - we sat outside at our table, sitting on pillows, which was a nice, louise was all gung-ho and was planning on ordering like 3 different tobacco discs, but as we found out, 1 was more than enough for 2 people, as she eventually ran to the bathroom to puke
  • we visited notre-dame basilica, which was ok
  • old montreal was pretty uneventful..but did feel a little bit like being in europe
  • we ate at an italian restaurant and got shitty service
  • we ate at a breakfast place called chez simon, which made me laugh

anyways, that covers most of what i can remember. it was a very nice trip, in a great city with the girl that i love. it goes without saying that we both had thoughts of moving up there, but i would have to learn some french.
